Lola Rose

Hiya,
The book this week is one that I havn't read for ages, but I picked it up last week and I couldn't put it down!!
Lola Rose is a book by Jacqueline Wilson about a Mum and her two children running away from their violent dad.
It is seen from the oldest child's point of view and she has a lot to deal with. They get on a train, in the middle of the night, and go to London. They get a flat and change their names and get enrolled in a new school. Lola Rose will have to adapt to a new life, looking over her shoulder every day, and dealing with her newfound fear of sharks.

But then mum gets into another relationship, with an art student years younger than her. Even though Lola Rose despised her dad, how can mum forget 10 years of marriage already?
Her secret identity is falling apart at school and her brother, Kendall, seems more interested in the aquarium than anything else. Will life ever be the same again?

This is a very touching and realistic story about a family dealing with domestic violence, at some parts it really upsets you.

This book was intended at older readers so there is some mild swearing.

8/10, It gets better at the end!

The Boy Who Lost His Face.

Now, as gory as the book's title sounds, it isn't. It is written by the incredible writer, Louis Sachar, I like a lot of his other books which I will surely review shortly.

It is about a young American teenager named David, who tags along with the popular kids, until one day they decide to steal a cane from the old lady living down the road. They go through with it and do lots of really mean stuff to her, like trampling her flowerbeds, pushing her out of her chair, pouring lemonade on her head, breaking her window and then stealing her cane.

Now David never wanted to do this, and he feels that he has nothing to do with it. But who is more to blame? The leaders or the followers?

David starts to think he is cursed when all the things that happened to Mrs Bayfield happens to him!!!

I suggest that you read this book because it really is good and there are lots of shocks and surprises all the way through. To order it follow this link,

I give this book a 7/10 because, although I t was a great story, there was no climax or really, really exciting bit.

NOTE - Before I said that I would only post on Wednesdays, I have now changed my mind. I will post once a week when I have time.

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

I have just finished an amazing and quite tragic book about a 9 year old boy in Germany in WW2. His dad is a commanding officer and the boy, Bruno, doesn't know what's going on.
They have to move house by Hitlers orders and Bruno hates it at his new place. It's small and dark and it smells funny too.
Out of his bedroom window he can see a large fenced off area in the distance. It is a concentration camp for Jews but, of course, Bruno doesn't know that. So he goes exploring and when he gets to the fence he meets a little boy who, like the rest of the people on the other side of the fence, is wearing striped pyjamas and has a shaved head.
The boy's name is Schmuel and it turns out that they share the same birthday, they are not related though. Their unlikely friendship developes until they are almosty like brothers to each other. Keeping his new and only friend secret is turning out to be one of the hardest things Bruno has ever done in his life.

This remarkable book is written by John Boyne and it is soon to be released as a film adaptation in September 2008. I would recommend that you read the book first. To order the book off amazon follow this link,

I got this book completely by chance, It was a christmas present off my wonderful auntie Jackie!! I'm so glad I read it and I hope that Boynes' other books are just as good.

9/10 (It finished a it too quick, (and too sad, but I wont give anything away!!))
